When prompted for an image of a doctor and patient surrounded by medical equipment, dozens of monitors were tracking heartbeat and respiration data. People can also look like they&#8217;re going crazy with emotion. My request to draw a frustrated person standing behind a box of cleaning supplies resulted in two people looking more angry than frustrated, and one downright demonic. DALL-E&#8217;s full suite of image editing tools provides users with a sophisticated set of options: extending generated images beyond the original frame (overpainting), making native adjustments to existing user-uploaded or AI-generated images, and combining or removing components while taking into account shadows, reflections, and texture (underpainting). Once users have achieved the generated image they desire, they can download and use it.       <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"&#x643;&#x64A;&#x641;-&#x64A;&#x639;&#x645;&#x644;-dall-e&#x61F;\"><strong>How does Dall-E work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>DALL-E is a form of generative AI, an emerging field of AI. Generative AI is defined as the ability of an AI system to create (\u201cgenerate\u201d) complex, coherent, and original content. For example, a generative AI model can generate sophisticated writing or images. DALL-E uses a specific type of generative AI called \u201cdiffusion models,\u201d named after the process of diffusion to generate new content. Diffusion is a natural phenomenon you may have witnessed before. A good example of diffusion occurs if you drop some food coloring into a glass of water. Regardless of where the food coloring starts, it will eventually spread throughout the glass and color the water uniformly.          <\/p>\n\n<p>In the case of computer pixels, the random movement of those pixels will always result in &#8220;TV noise.&#8221; This is the image equivalent of food coloring, creating a uniform color in a glass of water. The machine learning diffusion model, oddly enough, destroys its training data by successively adding &#8220;TV noise,&#8221; then inverting it to generate something new. It is capable of generating high-quality images with fine detail and realistic texture. DALL-E combines the diffusion model with a text-to-image model. Text-to-image is a machine learning algorithm that uses natural language processing (NLP), a field of artificial intelligence that allows computers to understand and process human language. DALL-E takes natural language input and produces an image that attempts to match the description.           <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"&#x627;&#x644;&#x623;&#x641;&#x636;&#x644;-&#x641;&#x64A;-dall-e\"><strong>The best in Dall-E<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>DALL-E has the potential to enable creativity and artistic expression, allowing for the conception of new ideas. OpenAI has undertaken several efforts to limit DALL-E&#8217;s ability to generate harmful content. These efforts include filtering pre-training data to reduce the amount of sexual and graphic violent content, as well as images of certain hate symbols; evaluating user input (text-to-image prompts, drawing prompts, and uploaded images) and rejecting content creation for inputs that would violate the company&#8217;s content policy; imposing price limits; and enforcing human monitoring and review. In contrast to our review of Stable Diffusion, these efforts have been remarkably effective.        <\/p>\n\n<p>The biggest risk DALL-E 2 faces is that it could shape impressionable minds with little accountability. OpenAI states, &#8220;The use of DALL-E 2 could harm individuals and groups by reinforcing stereotypes, erasing or distorting their reputations, providing them with disproportionately low-quality performance, or exposing them to humiliation. These behaviors reflect biases present in DALL-E 2&#8217;s training data and the way the model is trained.&#8221;     <\/p>\n\n<p>One example of this comes from the company&#8217;s realization that the explicit content filter applied to the pre-training data for DALL-E introduced a net new bias. Essentially, the filter, designed to reduce the amount of pre-training data containing nudity, sexual content, hate, violence, and abuse, reduced the frequency of the keyword &#8220;woman&#8221; by 14%. By contrast, the explicit content filter reduced the frequency of the keyword &#8220;man&#8221; by only 6%. In other words, OpenAI&#8217;s attempts to remove explicit material removed enough content representing women that the resulting dataset was significantly more representative of content representing men. This provides insight into the number of images on the internet that contain sexually explicit content of women.     <\/p>\n\n<p>OpenAI also notes that DALL-E&#8217;s default behavior generates images that overrepresent white skin tones and &#8220;generally Western concepts.&#8221; These tendencies toward harm are frighteningly powerful in combination. What happens to our children when they are repeatedly and over time exposed to a biased algorithmic worldview? What worldview will they assume is &#8220;correct,&#8221; and how will this impact their interactions with real people and society? Who is responsible for allowing this to happen?     <\/p>\n\n<p>Inappropriate sexualized representations of women and girls harm all users. DALL-E continues to demonstrate a tendency toward objectification and sexualization. This is particularly the case with inappropriate sexualized representations of women and girls, even with claims seeking images of professional women. This perpetuates harmful stereotypes, unfair bias, unrealistic ideals of women&#8217;s beauty and &#8220;attractiveness,&#8221; and false beliefs about intimacy between humans of all genders. Numerous studies have shown that increased exposure to images that promote the objectification of women negatively impacts the mental and physical health of girls and women.        <\/p>\n\n<p>DALL-E readily reinforces harmful stereotypes. Even when instructed to do otherwise, DALL-E is prone to generating outputs that perpetuate harmful stereotypes, particularly regarding race and gender. Some examples of what we found include:    <\/p>\n\n<p>DALL-E reflects and amplifies statistical gender stereotypes of occupations (e.g., female-only flight attendants, housekeepers, and stay-at-home parents versus male software developers). OpenAI has attempted to address these known challenges. While the technique appears to have worked well in some well-tested occupations, particularly in generating greater diversity in skin tones.       <\/p>\n\n<p>We found strongly gendered results for occupations such as product managers (all male) versus product marketers (all female), school principals (all male) versus teachers (all female), bankers (all male) versus bank tellers (all female), and managers (all male) versus human resources professionals (all female).   <\/p>\n\n<p>DALL-E&#8217;s advanced drawing features present new risks. While innovative and useful in many contexts, the high degree of freedom to alter images means they can be used to perpetuate harms and falsehoods. In OpenAI&#8217;s words, images that have been altered\u2014for example, to modify, add, or remove clothing, or add additional people to an image in compromising ways\u2014&#8221;could be used to directly harass or bully an individual, or to blackmail or exploit them.&#8221;       <\/p>\n\n<p>These features can also be used to create images that deliberately mislead others. For example, misinformation campaigns can remove objects or people from images or create images that simulate false events. It&#8217;s worth noting that the claims are also subject to OpenAI&#8217;s efforts to limit DALL-E&#8217;s ability to generate harmful content.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Tools like DALL-E pave the way for misinformation and disinformation. As with all generative AI tools, DALL-E can easily generate or enable false and harmful content, whether by reinforcing unfair biases or by deliberately generating images that mislead or mislead others.    <\/p>\n\n<p>Because OpenAI&#8217;s attempts to limit these attempts are fragile, and because images can be further manipulated using generative AI, fake and harmful visual content could be created with alarming speed. OpenAI notes that as the image generation process matures, it &#8220;leaves fewer traces and indications that the output was generated by AI, making the images more visible.&#8221; This means that generated images can be easily mistaken for real images, and vice versa. In other words, as these AI systems grow, it may become increasingly difficult to separate fact from fiction.       <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"&#x62D;&#x62F;&#x648;&#x62F;-&#x627;&#x633;&#x62A;&#x62E;&#x62F;&#x627;&#x645;-dall-e\"><strong>Limitations of using Dall-E<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>DALL-E&#8217;s Terms of Service do not permit use by children under 13 years of age.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17 are required to have parental permission to use DALL-E.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We have not received any sharing disclosures from OpenAI for DALL-E.
